Boat Hire Scotland

The highlands of Scotland are often considered to be the last great wilderness in Western Europe. While it is of course impossible to sail up the mountains, there are many beautiful rivers that you can leisurely float along if you choose boat hire in Scotland as opposed to a more traditional holiday rental. And there are many beautiful areas and sights that can be seen if this is the way that you choose to experience and explore this exciting region of the UK. When people consider boat hire in Scotland they usually tend to ask the same three questions and I will now attempt to answer them.

Is experience necessary?

Unlike the majority of jobs these days, boat hire in Scotland requires no experience whatsoever. Companies specialising in boat hire in Scotland are very much used to dealing with first timers and therefore are more than happy to show you the ropes. Unlike sailing boats, the majority of boats available to hire in Scotland are very easy to handle. They also don't move very fast so you should be able to feel confident handling them in about half an hour. The companies that own the boat obviously don't want you to crash their property therefore they will be patient and will not expect you to handle the boat until you are ready. They also teach you all necessary safety procedures and of course should anything happen, you will be insured.

Do I need much physical strength?

Of course boats will require a bit more strength than is required when driving a car but this is mainly required when you are tying up the boat. Steering is very easy going and provided you are an able bodied adult, female included, you should have no problems.

Do I need to spend my whole holiday on the boat?

The first thing to remember is that boats designed for the leisure industry will always be very comfortable therefore you might want to spend more time on them than you would expect. It is however completely unnecessary to spend long periods of time on board however and if you ask me if you are choosing boat hire in Scotland because you wish to explore the Highlands, then spending too long onboard would be a complete waste. The last time I hired a boat in the highlands, I spent on average 2 hours a day travelling on board and the rest of the time I was either off exploring or asleep.

Is it expensive?

When you consider the fact that boat hire in Scotland means that you do not need to pay for expensive British holiday accommodation, then it really is not expensive at all. When you realise that it also saves you money on travel and that you tend to spend a lot less time in the pub when it's so nice to drink on the deck of your boat, you may even find that boat hire in Scotland actually saves you money.
