Boat Hire
Boat Hire in the UK
If you're used to heading off to Spain for your holidays you may think that boat hire in the UK sounds pretty dull, depressing and boring. However, in the current financial climate, a lot of people are finding themselves in the position of having to take holidays a little closer to home. If you are finding yourself in this position than I don't think there is anyway to enjoy Britain more than to hire a boat. Of course the weather could be terrible and the price of a pint is just as different but you may find that peacefully floating along a canal has its own charms no matter what the weather.
One advantage that cant be argued with is that one of the massive disadvantages of holidays abroad is that your beloved pets are not only left behind but in many cases are put into the dreaded kennels. This is obviously stressful for them and also can be a little bit heartbreaking for you. Generally holidays in your home country does not require this and boat hire in the UK is no exception. The majority of boat hire companies in the UK are more than happy for you to take your dog or cat with you, however in my experience your cat may prefer to be left at home.
The next advantage of boat hire in the UK came as a bit of a shock to me. I have always lived in big cities like London and Manchester and I was surprised to find out that not all of the UK is, well, grey. There is actually a lot of beautiful tranquil countryside mixed in with the council estates and strangely enough Britain's canal and river network goes through the best of it. Like me, you may find a completely different picture of your home country should you choose to hire a boat. I've been all around Europe but just drinking my morning coffee slowly moving along a canal surrounded by beautiful countryside, there's something uniquely British about it and a type of Britain I had never imagined.
It should also not be forgotten that if you have no interest in tranquillity and beautiful countryside, there also exists another side of boat hire in the UK. I'm sure you are familiar with the infamous pub crawl. They generally involve a whole lot of horrible city pubs in quick succession. Well, when you are on a boating holiday, you encounter endless countryside pubs. And these pubs are so completely different than those in the city. Shockingly there are no drunken lunatics looking to throw glasses at you, just friendly country folk happy to let you drink your pint in peace or engage you in a conversation should you say hello. So basically if you cant go abroad this year I would highly recommend a boating holiday. And what's actually a little bit shocking is that I'd still recommend it even if you can afford to go abroad.
